Faced with changes in the patient care model and an increase in local demand for healthcare services, Hoag Memorial Hospital was challenged with expanding and remodeling its existing Huntington Beach Health Center to provide patients with streamlined access to world-class integrated health services and to improve the patient care journey. To further benefit the local community, Hoag aimed to create a finished project that payed tribute to the local environment and culture.
The Patient Centered Medical Home model was creatively modified through the inclusion of small, private physician offices for providers who prefer traditional operational flows. The development team navigated the challenge of remodeling a fully occupied health center by conducting its renovation in multiple phases. First, the team designed and constructed a freestanding sustainable, 55,500-square-foot medical office building with two sizes of standardized collaborative care modules to support primary care and specialty practices (modules can be combined or separated to accommodate a multitude of physician business models). Next, the project team renovated 16,000 square feet of the existing fully occupied 52,000-square-foot clinic. Finally, both buildings were united, and a centralized check-in station on each floor was constructed to create an excellent care journey for patients visiting multiple departments during their visit to the health center.
Post-remodel Hoag Health Center Huntington Beach accommodates more than 30 Hoag-affiliated physicians in more than 15 specialties who bring Hoag’s signature world class health services to the greater Huntington Beach community, and as the center is further developed there will be space available for an additional 35-40 physicians to meet the healthcare needs of the community.
The use of environmentally friendly building materials and landscaping allowed the health center to become the first LEED Silver certified health care building in the City of Huntington Beach. Recognized under the LEED Building Design and Construction: Core and Shell v3 - LEED 2009 standards, Hoag Health Center Huntington Beach is now among the most efficient, high-performing buildings in the world.
